AI Visibility Tools for Small Businesses: Start with the Question

Small businesses can begin measuring AI visibility without buying a large platform. Start with first-party reports and a small, repeatable prompt sample; pay for a tracker only when recurring coverage, competitor views, or saved answer history will change a decision.

A low-cost starting workflow

  • Write 10–20 questions a real customer might ask before choosing a provider or product.
  • Test those exact prompts on the AI surfaces that matter to your customers. Save date, market, full answer, brand mentions, and visible citations.
  • Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Google now provides a Generative AI performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode; Bing’s AI Performance report surfaces cited pages and grounding-query trends for supported experiences.
  • Review website analytics for AI-referred sessions separately from answer mentions.
  • Repeat the same prompts monthly and note changes in wording, platform behavior, and sample size.

This gives a baseline, not a complete census. A manual sample can miss answers that appear to another user or in another location.

When a paid tool is worth testing

Consider a tracker when you need recurring runs, a larger prompt set, multiple markets, citation-source exports, competitor tracking, or a shareable report. Compare a dedicated platform such as Peec AI, OtterlyAI, or Profound with the AI reporting already available in tools you pay for. Review the actual plan caps and model coverage; a list of supported engine names does not guarantee equivalent data collection.

Estimate recurring usage before subscribing: prompt count × engine count × locations × run frequency. Ask whether missing responses consume checks and what happens when a plan limit is reached. Avoid annual commitments until you have reviewed real outputs.

Avoid expensive false starts

Do not buy an “AI optimization” package because a dashboard gives your site a low score. Ask what was measured, which examples support the recommendation, and how you would validate an improvement. No platform can guarantee that ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google will cite or recommend a business.

For many small teams, the first useful investment is fixing inaccurate public business information, improving the main service/product pages, clarifying expertise and location, and answering common buyer questions. Treat each content or technical change as a hypothesis, then observe the same measures over time.
