GEO vs. AEO: What the Terms Mean

GEO usually means generative engine optimization; AEO usually means answer engine optimization. Both labels describe efforts to make useful information discoverable and usable in systems that generate or present direct answers. The industry does not apply the terms consistently.

What GEO commonly covers

GEO is often used for visibility in generative AI products and answer engines, including citation or mention monitoring, content and site improvements, and third-party source development. The term became prominent through early research on generative engine optimization, but individual vendor methods and claims go well beyond any single study.

What AEO commonly covers

AEO has long been used for making information eligible and useful for direct answers, such as featured snippets, voice assistants, and question-answer experiences. Some providers now use AEO to include AI assistants and answer engines as well.

Where they overlap

  • Understand the questions people ask and provide accurate, helpful answers.
  • Keep key pages accessible, clear, current, and connected through meaningful internal links.
  • Make business and product details consistent and verifiable.
  • Measure mentions, citations, visits, and platform-specific reports as separate signals.

What Google says about AI search optimization

Google’s Search Central documentation says its AI features do not require special schema or separate optimization files; the established technical and content guidance remains relevant. It cautions against chasing purported GEO hacks. This is Google’s guidance for Google Search, not a guarantee about every third-party AI product.

Which term should your team use?

Use the language your audience and organization understand, then define the actual work. A project called GEO might be content strategy, digital PR, technical SEO, or software monitoring. A project called AEO might cover similar work. Judge the scope, method, and evidence rather than the label.

A useful operating model

Treat AI visibility as an observable outcome, GEO and AEO as overlapping practice labels, and SEO fundamentals as a major part of the work. Establish a platform-specific baseline, improve the most relevant source information, and repeat the same sample. None of these terms implies guaranteed recommendations or citations.
