No checklist can guarantee that an AI system will mention, cite, or recommend a brand. A sound improvement process makes your information useful to people, accessible to search and answer systems, and easier to verify, then measures specific changes over time.
1. Establish the baseline
Record the prompts, platforms, markets, dates, brand mentions, citations, and cited pages relevant to your business. Keep a small, stable set for trend tracking and a separate rotating set for exploration. Follow the measurement guide so each observation has a denominator.
2. Fix discoverability and access
Check that important pages can be crawled, rendered, indexed where appropriate, and reached through internal links. Google’s guidance for AI features points site owners back to its established search fundamentals; there is no special AI schema or file that guarantees inclusion. Confirm access rules for each platform you care about.
3. Make important information easy to understand
Use clear page titles, descriptive headings, specific product or service details, current facts, named authors where appropriate, and direct answers to real questions. Support important claims with accessible evidence. Avoid filler pages written only to repeat prompts.
4. Strengthen the source behind the answer
Keep your organization, product, and contact information consistent across trustworthy sources. Publish original expertise, documentation, examples, and research that your team can stand behind. Third-party references can matter to discoverability, but do not manufacture reviews, citations, or mentions.
5. Prioritize a gap, then run a test
If a useful answer cites an outdated or weak page, inspect what information the answer needs and improve the most relevant page. If your brand is absent from an evaluation prompt, check whether your category, audience, and differentiators are clear on your site and elsewhere. Change one meaningful thing at a time when practical.
6. Re-measure without overstating causality
Repeat the same sample and report the result with its prompts, dates, platforms, and denominator. AI answers change for many reasons, so an observed change after a site update does not by itself prove the update caused it. Keep examples and note any platform changes.
What not to promise
- Guaranteed inclusion or citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews.
- A single universal AI ranking or visibility score.
- A direct result from adding schema, creating an llms.txt file, or rewriting content for a bot.
- Causal lift based only on a before-and-after dashboard score.
