How to Track Brand Visibility in Perplexity

Track Perplexity visibility by observing a fixed set of questions and coding brand mentions and visible source links separately. Perplexity crawler activity can help diagnose access, but crawler hits alone do not show that a brand was cited in an answer.

Define the Perplexity signal

For each response, record the prompt, date, language, location or market setting, selected model/mode if shown, brand presence, brand position if meaningful, visible citations, and cited URL. A response that names a company without linking to its site is a mention without an owned-site citation. A request from PerplexityBot is a crawler event, not an answer citation.

Perplexity documents PerplexityBot for search crawling and Perplexity-User for user-initiated retrieval. Its crawler guide describes how site owners can use robots.txt and, where applicable, published IP information. Confirm current guidance before changing firewall rules.

Create a repeatable prompt sample

  • Choose prompts from actual buyer questions, customer support topics, sales calls, and relevant search queries.
  • Group them by intent: learn, compare, choose, troubleshoot, and branded lookup.
  • Run the same wording at a steady interval. Save the full answer and every visible citation, not only the top result.
  • Track several runs before interpreting a trend; results can change with query wording, region, answer mode, source availability, and product changes.
  • Report the sample size and denominator. For example, a mention rate should say how many sampled answers mentioned the brand divided by how many valid answers were reviewed.

Monitoring platforms may provide recurring prompt tracking or a pre-collected index. Ask whether the data represents your chosen prompts or a broader sampled database, and how the platform collects results. Compare those modes separately in the tracking guide.

Use logs and analytics as separate evidence

Server logs can reveal requests labeled PerplexityBot or Perplexity-User when the hosting and proxy layers preserve those requests. Analytics may reveal referred sessions from Perplexity when the visit carries usable attribution. Neither captures non-clicked citations, and neither is a replacement for recording answer outputs.

If you inspect bot traffic, validate user-agent identity and network details using the provider’s published documentation. User-agent strings can be spoofed; log labels by themselves do not authenticate a crawler. Check status codes, response size, and the actual page served to distinguish successful retrieval from a denied or broken request.

Report findings responsibly

Keep mention rate, citations, answer position, referral sessions, and crawler requests in separate columns. Note date, prompt set, locale, platform mode, collection method, and any exclusions. Avoid claiming that a page ranks first in Perplexity based on a few checks or that more crawls guarantee citation.
