Technical AI search optimization is the work of making important pages accessible, indexable, understandable, and measurable on the search systems a publisher chooses to serve. It does not guarantee a citation or recommendation.
Start with each provider’s actual eligibility rules
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says pages need to meet ordinary Search eligibility requirements, including being indexed and eligible for a snippet; there are no extra technical requirements or special AI schema. Keep normal Googlebot access, useful text content, internal links, and structured data consistent with visible content. Search Console’s Generative AI performance report can help inspect Google feature impressions.
For ChatGPT Search, OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot separately from GPTBot and ChatGPT-User. For Claude, Anthropic documents distinct search, user-fetch, and training bots. Perplexity likewise documents search and user agents. Decide which uses your organization allows, then configure robots.txt and network controls accordingly. Check current official guidance before implementation.
Audit the delivery path
- Verify the canonical URL, robots meta, robots.txt, sitemap, and internal links.
- Fetch key pages as a normal browser and inspect server-rendered HTML for the main answer, not just navigation or a loading shell.
- Confirm that the hosting/CDN/WAF returns a usable page to search crawlers rather than a challenge screen, redirect loop, or rate limit.
- Review logs for successful requests to important pages and separate bot categories.
- Use Google Search Console URL Inspection and the Bing URL inspection tools to diagnose the respective search-indexing state.
Do not treat a user-agent spoof test as proof that the real crawler is allowed. Use vendor-published verification guidance when available and inspect both edge and origin logs.
Make the page easy to interpret
Give each page one clear job, use descriptive titles and headings, state key definitions in visible text, and link to related guides with meaningful anchors. Keep product names, dates, methods, and limitations explicit. Structured data should accurately describe visible page content; do not add unsupported Review, Product, or AggregateRating markup.
Avoid “AI-only” files or magic markup as a substitute for crawlable pages. Google explicitly says no special AI files or schema are needed for its AI Search features. A file may still be useful to another declared integration, but don’t represent it as a Google eligibility requirement.
Measure implementation separately from outcomes
Track whether pages are fetchable and indexed as a technical state. Track Google Search Console impressions, Bing AI citations, sampled ChatGPT/Perplexity answers, referrals, and crawler requests as separate outcome signals. A successful crawl does not prove citation; a citation does not prove a click.
For measurement definitions, use AI visibility metrics explained. For bot requests, use AI crawler analytics. For provider-specific protocols, review OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, and Google Search Central.
